Physics in Movies

One of the movie that I had watched related to physics was The Martian. What I obviously know was about the gravity. Gravity is a force pulling together all matter. The more matter, the more gravity. Hence, things that have a lot of matter pull more strongly.

Mass is how we measure the amount of matter in something. The bigger the mass of something, the more gravitational pull it exerts. It also applies the Newton Third Law which state that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. As we walk on the surface of the Earth, the gravity pulls on us, and we pull back. This obey the Newton Third Law.

So, from the movie of The Martian, Mark Watney landed on Mars. Mars have only 40% of Earth’s gravity. Hence, moving there is a little bit different from Earth. It means that Mars pulls Mark downward with a force that is 60% less than on Earth. Judging by that, moving is much easier and lifting object with heavier mass will be easier. Mark’s weight also is less than his weight on Earth.

There is strong radiation on Mars as their magnetic field is really weak. It exposed the astronauts to large doses of radiation from solar flares and cosmic ray. On Earth, there’s also radiation but it is shielded by Earth’s magnetic field. Earth’s magnetic field shields the Earth from high energy radiation that comes from the Sun.

That’s all from me. Thank you for reading.
